Jolly Postie, Baldock Street, Royston
The Jolly Postie was a redundant 1930s Postal Sorting Office, bought by McMullens Hertfordshire Brewery. The concept was to create a destination pub/restaurant that was fun. All interior décor and exterior signage was light-hearted. As you approach the Jolly Postie, you can see see the period post van parked in the entrance. The back bar has been created to appear as old sorting office letter cages and the bar beer pumps plumbed in through antique P.O. counter scales complete the effect.
There is a free-standing letter box and telephone kiosk converted into poser and dining tables. Twenty old P.O. bicycles were sourced, refurbished and used as railings and partitions. A popular piece of fun is the 1950s Austin van restored to full P.O. livery and converted into a private dining space for eight people.
